Everything You Need to Know About Using Lube

If you've never used lube before and want to give it a try, or you only use it in times of drought, let us be the first to say: it's a magical elixir that helps enhance comfort and pleasure in just about every sexual scenario. While using it still seems somewhat taboo or even scary for a lot of people, rest assured that using lube is as commonplace as using condoms. If you don't currently have a tube on your bedside table, this guide will inspire you to run out and get one ASAP.

1. Know Your Options

There are countless brands and textures to choose from, but lube falls into four main categories: water-, silicone-, petroleum-, and oil-based. And they each come with their own set of rules. For example, water-based lube is safe to use in any situation, but it dries out faster. Silicone-based lube is great for water-play but can't be used with your toys. Water based is also a great natural approach. So, when choosing a lube, make sure you're aware of the pros and cons of each ingredient base and pick the one that's right for whatever you're getting into.

2. How To Apply Lubricant to Yourself, Your Partner, or Your Toy

There's really no wrong way to use personal lubricant . . . other than not using enough. So, go forth and lubricate! To avoid a cold shock, rub the lube vigourously in your hands before application. A few pumps of lube applied to your clitoris, vulva, vagina, anus, fingers, toy, and/or lover is all you need to make penetration nice and slippery. Lube also makes for a great oral sex assistant when applied to the lips, it stimulates eroginous zones like the nipples, and adds a sexy factor to any massage.

3. A Word of Caution

Not all lubes are created equally. Steer clear of brands that contain glycerin, parabens, scents, or sugars. These chemicals can easily disturb the delicate PH balance in the vagina, resulting in allergic reactions, Bacterial Vaginosis, and yeast infections. If you're prone to sensitivities, it's best to leave the tingling and warming varieties behind altogether. For added safety, buy your lube from reputable retailers.

4. Have Fun and Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Lube is an unrivaled asset when it comes to foreplay, arousal, and marathon-length romps. Even research shows that lubricants are associated with significantly higher reports of sexual pleasure and satisfaction. If you have any questions about lubricants, stop by a reputable sex shop with knowledgable staff  or talk to your Doctor.
